Need help with the naturalization process? Davis Immigration is here to help.
Naturalization is the process by which U.S. Citizenship is granted to a foreign national. Paths to citizenship are as follows:
- A green card holder of at least five years applies for citizenship. This is the most common path.
- A green card holder for at least three years who has been a spouse of a U.S. citizen for at least three years.
- Non-citizen members of the U.S. armed forces and their spouses and children may be eligible for expedited processing for citizenship.
- Acquiring citizenship through parents.
The eligibility requirements for naturalization vary somewhat based on the path to citizenship but generally require that the applicant meet the following criteria:
- To be at least 18 years of age (minors can become naturalized at the same time as their parents if the parent applies on behalf of the child)
- To be physically and continuously present in the United States for a set period of time
- To have lived in a state or a USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) district for at least three months
- To be able to read, write and speak English and have knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government
- To have good moral character and respect the constitution and U.S. laws
Once eligibility is determined, there are several steps in the process towards citizenship:
- Complete an application
- Appear for a biometrics appointment
- Prepare for a naturalization interview
- Attend a naturalization interview
- Take the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony
