I-9 EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION
The I-9 form is used to verify the identity and work authorization of individuals hired for employment and is required for all employees working in the U.S. regardless of their citizenship. Both employers and employees must complete the form and employees must present the employer with documents verifying identity and employment authorization. Employers must determine if the documents reasonably appear to be genuine and record the document information on the form. The form must be kept on file by employers for three years after the date of hire or one year after employment ends, whichever is later. Forms must be made available for inspection by the government upon request. – more information
E-VERIFY
U.S. law requires that companies employ only those who may legally work in the United States. E-verify is an internet based system that allows employers to determine their employees’ work eligibility. It works by comparing an employee’s I-9 (Employment & Eligibility Verification) to Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration records to confirm employment eligibility. – more informationBeginning on Jan.1, 2017, all Tennessee employers with 50 or more employees must use the E-verify system to verify the employment eligibility of all workers hired on or after that date. Previously, employers with six or more employees were required to either use the E-verify system or request and retain certain documents from every employee. – more information
